No. 084 - The ABC of Biblical Giving

The Scripture sets forth three distinct categories of giving which appertain to the Justified walking in the Way of Life. The first and most vital category is support of the local Shepherd, that he may teach the Word of God. The second is support of the Evangelist, that he may proclaim the Gospel of the Kingdom of God. The third is relief of fellow saints who have fallen into economic distress. Of the three categories, the oft-quoted criterion, “not grudgingly or of necessity,” applies only to the latter two.

Contrary to the general teaching of the Protestant Pulpit, the Tithe is the criterion for the first category of giving. The Scripture records that both Abraham and Jacob paid the Tithe to Melchizedek, and that Christ Jesus is a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. Thus, the Tithe was instituted long before institution of the Old Covenant, and the Tithe continues in force in the present era of the New Covenant.

This study looks in detail not only at the valid categories of giving, but also at the categories which bring discipline and cursing. It enumerates the blessings associated with giving and the judgment which results from failure to give. Throughout, particular attention is paid to the ministry of the apostle Paul, and to the example which it provides regarding the ownership of physical assets of a ministry or local congregation.

No. 085 - Sell Thy Cloak and Buy a Sword

On the night in which he was betrayed, Jesus issued to his followers a number of directives. One of those instructions was for each to arm himself forthwith, even at the cost of economic sacrifice. The directives reflect the fact that thenceforth the disciples would be operating independently, rather than as a group with Jesus as their constant companion, supplier, and guardian. Nevertheless, the command to be armed is troubling to many who claim to be Christian. Some teachers and commentators simply dismiss the command, thus displaying their contempt for Jesus and the Scripture. Others are unable to reconcile the command with commands given by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. But when the respective passages are considered carefully in context, the difficulties disappear, and the need for the Christian to be armed is clear.

No. 086 - Testing and the “Way of Escape”

Because of a poor translation of a single verse of Scripture, countless Christians in the face of testing have in vain prayed and searched for a way of escape, some losing their faith because the anticipated deliverance did not come. The verse in question--I Corinthians 10:13--when correctly translated and seen in light of a passage in the Twelfth Chapter of Hebrews, reveals a remarkable truth concerning testing; yet the truth has gone unnoticed by virtually everyone. Contrary to popular notion, the Lord God does not provide a “way of escape” from testing. Rather, the Lord provides instead an outcome or “sequel” which is designed to motivate and encourage the Justified to endure to the end the episode of testing which the Lord brings upon him.
